NCAA Track: Joe Thomas 4th in High Jump
St.
Thomas senior Joe Thomas repeated as an All-American
with a fourth-place leap of 6-9 in the high jump Friday
at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships
in Decatur, Ill.
Thomas, who jumped 6-11 for second place at the 2003
outdoor nationals, was in the last group to qualify for
nationals as his previous best of 6-8 was tied for 14th
and dangerously near the cutoff. He scored five team
points for the UST men.
The Tommie women still have 16 points through two days.
Soph Kristal Grigsby, who won Thursday's long jump, tied
for ninth in Friday's high jump at 5-3 3/4. St. Thomas
will have its women's 4x100 and 4x400 relays plus Brigid
Power in the 1,500 meters on Saturday as it tries to hit
30 points and place among the top five teams.
The Gustavus women picked up 10 points as senior Kristin
Petersen won the discus in 159-6.
In Friday prelims, UST junior Bryce Beckman ran 1:52.05
but failed to make the eight-man finals in the 800
meters. Tommie junior Carson Glad advanced to Saturday's
finals in the 400 meters with the fifth-best prelim time
of 47.51. Glad will also run with UST's 4x100 and 4x400
relays in Saturday's finals as St. Thomas tries to reach
20 team points and finish in the top 10-15 of the team
race.
