Sat. NCAA Track: Men place 9th, Women get 13th

The St. Thomas men had three top-five finishes Saturday and finished ninth with 19 points in the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships in Decatur, Ill.

The Tommie men had seven All-Americans. The St. Thomas women finished in 13th place with 21 points and had six All-Americans.

The Tommie men's 4x100 relay unit of Jeremy Krentz, Tom Hart, Cassidy Glad and Carson Glad clocked 41.42 and placed third to claim six team points. Carson Glad later took fifth in the 400 dash in 47.82 to score four more points. The Tommies' 4x400 relay of P. J. Thiesen, Carson and Cassidy Glad and Jason Schwietz placed fifth in 3:13.73. Joe Thomas scored five points in Friday's high jump. It was the sixth consecutive year the Tommie men's 4x400 placed in the top five.

The Tommie women were disqualified in the 4x100 relay, but bounced back and got an eighth from junior Brigid Power in the 1,500 in 4:35.04 for her first career All-America honor; and placed fifth in the 4x400 relay in 3:47.79 with Alicia Wolff, Christina Chapman, Kristal Grigsby and Molly Bauman.

In Power's race, just .60 of a second seperated the third through eighth-place finishers in the 1,500.

The Tommie women got 10 points from Grigsby's victory in Thursday's long jump and six points from Karolien Bastiaens third-place finish in Thursday's pole vault.

Fri. NCAA Track: Joe Thomas 4th in High Jump

St. Thomas senior Joe Thomas repeated as an All-American with a fourth-place leap of 6-9 in the high jump Friday at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships in Decatur, Ill.

Thomas, who jumped 6-11 for second place at the 2003 outdoor nationals, was in the last group to qualify for nationals as his previous best of 6-8 was tied for 14th and dangerously near the cutoff. He scored five team points for the UST men.

The Tommie women still have 16 points through two days. Soph Kristal Grigsby, who won Thursday's long jump, tied for ninth in Friday's high jump at 5-3 3/4. St. Thomas will have its women's 4x100 and 4x400 relays plus Brigid Power in the 1,500 meters on Saturday as it tries to hit 30 points and place among the top five teams.

The Gustavus women picked up 10 points as senior Kristin Petersen won the discus in 159-6.

In Friday prelims, UST junior Bryce Beckman ran 1:52.05 but failed to make the eight-man finals in the 800 meters. Tommie junior Carson Glad advanced to Saturday's finals in the 400 meters with the fifth-best prelim time of 47.51. Glad will also run with UST's 4x100 and 4x400 relays in Saturday's finals as St. Thomas tries to reach 20 team points and finish in the top 10-15 of the team race.

The MIAC will have 51 athletes -- including eight men and seven women from St. Thomas -- competing this weekend in the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships in Decatur, Ill. The competition runs Thursday through Sunday May 27-29 on the campus of Millikin University.

The Tommie men will try to post their sixth consecutive top-5 finish in the 4x400 relay. Coach Steve Mathre's team placed third in that event in a photo finish last year and placed second in the 4x400 in the NCAA indoor meet. Juniors Carson Glad, Jason Schwietz and Cassidy Glad and freshman P.J. Theisen will compete in the 4x400, which is seeded seventh but is just a shade behind the time of the No. 2 seed.

Carson Glad will also compete in the 400 meters, where's he's seeded third, and in the 4x100 (seeded ninth) with Cassidy Glad, senior Tom Hart and junior Jeremy Krentz.

Theisen will also run the 400 hurdles, where he's seeded sixth. Junior Bryce Beckman is seeded eighth in the 800 meters. Senior Joe Thomas, the 2003 NCAA outdoor runner-up with a 6-11 leap, is tied for 14th in the high jump with a season best of 6-8.

St. John's has three men qualified in four events, while Carleton will have two distance runners competing. Concordia, Bethel, Augsburg, St. Olaf and St. Mary's each has one qualifier.

On the women's side, Coach Joe Sweeney has seven Tommie athletes competing in six events. Sophomore Kristal Grigsby is seeded second in the high jump and long jump; senior Karolien Bastiaens, the 2003 NCAA runner-up, is seeded fourth in the pole vault; junior Andretta Colley is seeded fifth in the long jump; and junior Brigid Power is seeded 10th in the 1,500 meters.

In the relays, UST junior Molly Bauman, soph Christina Chapman, Grigsby and junior Alicia Wolff will run in both the 4x100 (seeded 12th) and 4x400 (seeded third). St. Thomas placed third last year at nationals in the 4x400.
