" A big reason
for our success has been the talents and dedication of our assistant
coaches... St. Thomas is fortunate to have one of the largest track and field staffs in the country!" |

Head
Coach Steve Mathre
2006
MIAC
Coach of the Year
|
Coach Steve
Mathre has continued St. Thomas'
success as a conference and national power in NCAA division
III men's track and field. His 2005 team
recently captured the programs
21consecutive conference
title and recorded the leagues fastest relay in
history. The Tommies 4x400
finished
runner-ups at the NCAA National Championships this
March. Mathre, now in his
11th season as head coach,
previously served five seasons as a Tom's assistant. In
10 years as head he's coached 20 athletes to 31
All-America performances. |
As the head coach, Coach Mathre
has many responsibilities, however on track he specializes in the
sprints and hurdles.
His sprint core has literally dominated
the MIAC in the last nine years - it is not uncommon to see a flood
of purple cross the finish line in an MIAC finals race. Last spring UST captured five out of the top 8 spots in the conference
400 hurdle finals. In the last nine years, Coach Mathre's sprinter's and hurdler's have broken 18 separate
conference (MIAC) records.
Mathre's relay teams hold conference records in every
sprint relay race possible: 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400
(indoor) and 4x400 (outdoor). His relays teams have also
enjoyed unprecedented national success with a string of
14 All-American performances in the last eight years.
The last two seasons include two NCAA runner-up 4x400
teams and a third place finish (see
the video) In what some have called the
most exciting race they have ever seen, just .04 out of
first place at the NCAA national finals. An additional all-time MIAC and school records fell with a 40.85
clocking in the 4x100m relay. This team enjoyed a
number one national ranking going into the NCAA
Championships.
|
Mathre was a six-time MIAC hurdle champion and five-time
All-American
for St. Olaf College, and was named the league MVP as a
senior in 1990. Mathre was an NCAA runner-up in the 400
hurdles as a senior and still holds the all-time MIAC best time for
that event.
As a USATF certified coach, Mathre has the
personality, the knowledge and experience necessary to help his
athletes be the best they can be.
Mathre is an active member of the US Track Coaches Association and
serves as the DIII Web
master and is a regular clinician and Level I USA track
and field instructor. |
