Computing Facilities

The O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library's computing facilities support the teaching and research mission of the University.  This guide describes the computing capabilities available to UST students, faculty, and staff.

The Information Commons in O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library brings together support for research, writing, information literacy, plus computer application support to assist students’ development of papers, presentations and projects.

Computer desk assistance

Trained students at the Level 1 and Lower Level service desks can assist you with your technology questions.  Student staff wear IRT name badges - watch for them!

Printers and printing

The first 400 prints each term are free for UST students.  Prints for non-UST patrons and copies over the 400-print quota are 10 cents per page.  You can now check your printing activity.  Please see IRT's Printing @ UST for more information.

  • Level 1: 2 printers on the west side, and one near the open access computers
  • Lower Level:  2 printers
  • Sublevel:  2 printers

Scanners

There are four computers on the Lower Level with scanners for public use.

Wireless access

Wireless access is available throughout the library. Signal strength is particularly strong on Level 2 and Lower Level, as well as on the patio outside the library.  Please see IRT's Wireless @ UST FAQ page for technical requirements and other important information.

Laptop plug-in to the UST network

  • Level 1:  the area outside the O'Shaughnessy Room (6 jacks), and the O'Shaughnessy Room.
  • Level 4:  the group study rooms 409/410, 411/412, 413/414, 421, and 422.

Network cables to plug in laptops are available for in-library use at the Reserve Desk on Level 1.

Software CD checkout

  • Students can check out Mathematica and Minitab at the Reserve Desk on Level 1.
  • Faculty and staff can check out Microsoft Office for take-home use.

Microsoft Office product training materials

These are available from the help menu in any Microsoft product, or directly on the Microsoft site at: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/training/default.aspx. Select the desired product under "Browse Training Courses" to see a list of audio/video tutorials.

Equipment checkout

  • There are 5 LaCie floppy disk drives available for check out at the Reserve Desk on Level 1.
  • Faculty and staff (but not students) can check out portable equipment including laptops, LCD projectors, and video cameras.  A Request for Services web form must be filled out 72 hours prior to pickup at the O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library Reserve Desk on Level 1.

Open access computers

The library offers a few open access computers in our public computing area on Level 1.  Use of these computers is limited to users performing library research and users who may need research assistance from the library staff.  Users wishing to check their email, do word processing, utilize special software, or accessing their centrally stored resources should use one of the InfoCommons computers on Level 1, Lower Level, or Sublevel.

Group study room computers

Computers have been installed in study rooms 312A, 312B, and 322 in the library. These computers have the usual Microsoft software as the computers in the InfoCommons and other computing labs (Word, Excel, etc.); however, they are not able to print.

Room 208 computer classroom

This classroom is available to instructors who wish to incorporate technology into their course sessions. The room offers 32 PCs, 1 printer, and one PC instructor station.  To reserve this computer classroom online, use the Request for Services web form.  (Choose the form from the "facilities scheduling" link.)

Room 314 computer classroom

This classroom is generally used by library staff for library research presentations and instructional sessions.

Assistive technology workstations

One assistive technology workstation is on Level 1, near the upright display case, and the other is in Room 308.  They offer hardware and software designed to meet the needs of our assistive technology users.  The scanners at these workstations are for assistive technology only and are NOT available for general use.
