Tips   Workshops   Export   Guide   FAQ

RefWorks is a web-based program to create bibliographies and manage citations for your papers, projects and research. With RefWorks you can save lots of time and effort by:
.

  • Setting up a personal database of references

  • Importing references from UST databases, catalogs, and other resources (like a web site, for example)

  • Automatically formatting a "works cited" in proper style

1. Register (see a demo)

Select RefWorks at UST Libraries. Set up a personal account. Under "New to RefWorks" click Sign up for an Individual Account. Registration is quick, easy and free for UST

2. Search, Save, Export

Export to RefWorks Guide: Getting citations into your RefWorks account

Use RefWorks to compile citations you want and save them for your bibliography

Databases have different ways to save references, but it's usually easy. Look for check boxes beside items, or folder icons or any other way to mark, save and export them

RefWorks provides two ways to get saved online references into your personal database

  • Direct Method:
RefWorks automatically sends marked records to your account. See a demo

  • Indirect Method
You save references as plain text and then you import into RefWorks. See a demo. And below

3.  Import  (see a demo)

  • Direct Import: by link in data source

After marking records, look for a RefWorks link anywhere in the save/mark options, and select.

  • Indirect Import: by txt file you save to desktop

If there is no RefWorks link anywhere in the save/mark options, save records as a text file to your desktop.  Basic steps.

  • Copy/Paste: by manual addition

Web sites and other resources (like Lexis-Nexis, for example) cannot export citation data. Make separate entries in RefWorks. See Manual Additions.

4.  Create your bibliography (see a demo)

  • When importing, be careful to choose the correct data source from the UST drop down list

  • Browse to select your saved text file

  • Click Import

  • Once imported and assigned a folder (recommended): Choose Bibliography from the upper tool bar

  • Choose the required citation "style." The most popular are listed first

  • Select the output format: html, word, or rich text

Write-n-Cite
A plug-in for MS Word, Write-n-Cite makes it easy to insert footnotes or  in-text citations into your research paper. Download the plug-in to your own computer, not available on UST computers. In Word, when connecting to RefWorks from off campus, supply the UST Group Code. To get this code, retrieve your registration e-mail confirmation or contact Jan Malcheski 651-962-5453 (j9malcheski@gmail.com)

One Line/Cite View
Alternative to Write-n-Cite, not dependent on MS Word on a PC, or UST sites. This options lets you work with your word processor footnote tool.
