| Services
for Students
The Libraries provide a wide variety
of services to current students to support research, job hunting, class work,
and technology assistance.
Access Services
On the skyway level of Opus Hall, immediately inside the library
entrance, the circulation staff and student workers will
help you with borrowing materials, reserves, and inter-library loan services. In addition, they
will be able to answer your general questions and provide change for
copiers.
Reference
Materials and Services
The first floor of the library houses the majority of library resources,
including back issues of journals, ERIC documents, reference and
circulating materials, and computers to access electronic resources.
The reference
librarians are available to guide you through the research process,
either on a walk-up basis, or through a scheduled appointment of
longer duration. Appointments are encouraged, and can be arranged for
small groups or individuals either as a general orientation to resources,
or for a specific research topic.
Reference
Consultations
Professional reference service is
available at all St. Thomas libraries. While walk-in service is typically available,
students should make appointments for lengthy reference
consultations or tutorials. Librarians are also available for phone and
email consultations. Students with a complex research assignment should make an appointment for
individualized assistance with the liaison librarian in their subject
area.
Study
Spaces
While the library includes ample space for individual and group work in
common areas, there is also a room set aside for quiet study on the first floor of the
library. Four group studies are also available, and can be reserved in
advance.
Computing
Resources
The Infocommons area of the library has 29 public access computers
available for members of the UST community for all their computing needs. The library
also another 60 computers in three computer classrooms, two with PC's
and one with Macintosh computers. There are also multimedia
computers for scanning, converting material to digital
formats, and for use with specialized software. Student
technology assistants are available during library hours to help instruct
users on the use of the hardware and software and to help troubleshoot
problems with projects and documents.
Copiers
Photocopiers and microform copiers are available for public use. These
machines accept coins or Express Cards. Change is available at
Access Services.
Remote
Access
Access to our web-based library databases is available from home or
office; students will need a current UST network username and password to
access our resources from off campus. To access the Libraries' online
databases and indexes, see http://www.stthomas.edu/libraries/databases/index.htm;
a link to the directions for off-campus users can be found on the left
side of the database page. For more information about these
services, please consult a Keffer librarian.
Borrowing
Privileges
Students have
borrowing privileges at all UST libraries, as well as other CLIC
consortium schools. All users must present a current university I.D. to
check out books. Books are checked out for six weeks at a time; a book can be recalled by the library after three weeks
if requested by another user. Books can be renewed if not currently
requested by another user. Materials from other libraries Books from
other CLIC libraries, including other UST libraries, can be requested
electronically through CLICnet, our
online catalog. Books that are not in the catalog may be requested from
Interlibrary loan online.
Articles are available from over
150 periodical
indexes or databases with access to full-text from tens of
thousands of journals. Articles not available online can be obtained in person
if the library subscribes to the print version or they can
be requested by filling out our web-based interlibrary loan form. Some
fees may apply.
Reserve Readings
Faculty may place materials (print or
electronic) on reserve for use by their students. Some materials must be
used in the libraries, while others can be checked out. For information
about reserve materials for your course, dial (651) 962-4642 for the
Keffer Library access services desk, or see our Reserves
web page.
Current awareness
Some of the library databases allow
individual users to sign up for an e-mail service alerting them to new
issues of key journals they wish to track. Contact any UST library
reference desk or liaison librarian to see if this service is available
for your journals and for assistance in setting up the alerts.
Liaison
librarians
Liaison librarians act as liaisons or
subject specialists to faculty, staff, and students in specified academic
departments. Liaison librarians serve as the primary contact between
faculty and staff in those departments and the library. They work with students doing
research, and work
with faculty in developing the libraries' collections and providing library use
instruction. The Keffer Library
liaison librarians and their subject specialties are:

reference desk for more information: (651) 962-4664. See
the complete
