General Sites:

ERIC
The main page for all ERIC resources, including the ERIC database, thesaurus, journal listing etc.  Please note that ERIC is in transition, and most of the Clearinghouses have closed as of December 2003. A few clearinghouses are still operating with assistance from their home institution or have moved their web-based resources to other locations. Please contact Donna Nix or Michelle Filkins for information on a specific clearinghouse.

Educator's Reference Desk
Formerly AskERIC, this site has lesson plans, listserv archives, a link to the ERIC database, bibliographies and more. The search page for the database includes a link to the ERIC Thesaurus, a list of ERIC journals and other information.

History and Theories of Education 

This site, maintained by Florence Coles Ballenger Teacher's Center at Eastern Illinois University, has links on the history of education, child development stages, and learning theories.

19th Century Schoolbooks
View digital images of school textbooks used in the 19th century in the United States. The collection is housed at the University of Pittsburgh Digital Research Library.

Theory into Practice Database 
This site includes a database of approximately 50 major theories on human learning and instruction.  The content for each theory includes an overview, scope and application notes, an example, principles, and references. Several have graphic diagrams or Quicktime videos.

What Works Clearinghouse
The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) was established by the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences to provide educators, policymakers, and the public with a central, independent, and trusted source of scientific evidence of what works in education

CRESST (Center for Research, Evaluation, Standards & Student Testing)
Good resource on K-12 testing.  Includes ordering information for publications, discussion areas, and a listserv.

FREE (Federal Resources for Educational Excellence) 
Links to educational resources supported by Federal agencies.

The Condition of Education 
Online version of publication by this title.  Describes current status and recent progress of education in the United States.  Does not have a search feature.

Digest of Education Statistics
Online version of this basic statistical source; this site now has links to tables from previous editions, going back to 1990 in some cases.  Does not have a search feature.

Projections of Education Statistics
Online version of the printed publication.

School District Demographics
This site provides access to school district geographic and demographic data useful for describing and analyzing characteristics of school districts, children and K-12 education.

National Center for Education Statistics 
Federal agency that collects and analyzes data related to education.

National Board of Professional Teaching Standards 
Works to improve the teaching profession through development of standards and a voluntary certification program.

REL Midwest

Connected with the former North Centeral Regional Education Laboratory, this site focuses on Educational Standards, Technology, Applications and Resources as they relate to education in Minnesota and six other midwest states.

State Education Departments
This page, from the Council of Chief State School Officers, has links to all other state education agencies.
MN Department of EducationEducator Licensing   

Minnesota Kids Count (Children's Defense Fund) 
Online version of the latest Kids Count Data Book.  Assesses the well-being of Minnesota's children based on ten indicators.  Although not strictly an education-related site, there is good data here on the quality of life for children living here.

America's Children: Key National Indicators
Online version of a biennial report on the condition of children in the United States.  Twenty five indicators describe the status of children in the areas of economic security, education, health and social environment among others.

Minnesota Statutes and Session Laws
Go here to search for current laws and administrative rules related to education.

Gateway to Educational Materials (GEM) 
Includes lesson plans, curriculum units and other resources.  A special project of the ERIC Clearinghouse of Information and Technology.

Smithsonian Institution
Searchable for lesson plans, websites, field trips, and publications available for purchase.  Subject areas include: Art & Design, Science & Technology, History & Culture, and Language Arts.
