University
of Minnesota Biomedical Library
The U of M's
Biomedical Library subscribes to relevant print and
electronic resources not available at UST. To use
their print reference books, print journals, or electronic indexes and
databases, you must visit the library in person. The Biomed Library's
catalog is accessible via the Web from any
location. If you'd like to borrow a book from the Biomed Library, you may request it through UST's
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) using
this form, and
we will obtain it for you.
The "About the
Library" drop-down menu on the Biomed Library's home page
contains links to information on the library's
hours,
location,
parking, etc.
Key Databases
MICROMEDEX - This powerful
database
contains current information on prescription and
over-the-counter drugs, including administration and dosage,
adverse effects, drug interactions, and information for
patients. Resources include DRUGDEX; POISINDEX; Martindale,
the Extra Pharmacopoeia; Index Nominum; Physician's Desk
Reference; and USP DI. (You must visit the U of M's
Biomedical Library to use this resource.)
MEDLINE - Compiled by the U.S.
National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE is the world's most
comprehensive source of life sciences and biomedical
bibliographic information. The Biomed Library offers
access to Medline in three different forms:

MEDLINE via
Ovid Web/PubMed
- This Web-based searchable database contains over 14
million article references published in more than 4,800
biomedical journals and magazines since 1966. Contents
are updated weekly. The MEDLINE via Ovid Web version
must be used at the Biomed Library. The PubMed version
is freely available via the Web.

MEDLINEplus
- This site contains extensive information about drugs, an
illustrated medical encyclopedia, interactive patient
tutorials, and the latest health news. It also
provides links to pre-formulated searches of the MEDLINE/PubMed
database, allowing you to find references to the latest
medical journal articles on your topic.
Commercial Products
Epocrates
- At this commercial site, you can subscribe to one or more
point-of-care reference products such as Rx Pro, an
enhanced drug and formulary reference with integrated ID
treatment guide and tools. Epocrates's products are
developed by clinicians specifically for use with PDAs.

Psychological Association (APA)
- Division of Psychopharmacology and Substance Abuse - From California State University's Social Science Research and
Instructional Council.
American Society of
Health-System Pharmacists -
This 30,000-member national professional
association represents pharmacists who practice in
hospitals, health maintenance organizations, long-term care
facilities, home care, and other components of health care
systems.
Center Watch - Clearinghouse for information on
clinical trials of new and experimental medications.
Also lists information on medications recently approved by
the FDA.
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) -
The CDC, one of the 13 major
operating components of the Department of Health and Human
Services, is at the forefront of public health efforts to
prevent and control infectious and chronic diseases,
injuries, workplace hazards, disabilities, and environmental
health threats.
Drug
Discrimination Bibliographic Database - Funded by
the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Provides
access to Dr. Ian Stolerman's ongoing Comprehensive
Bibliography of Drug Discrimination Research.
Drugnet -
Information on treatment, assessment, prevention, and
research, including an on-line grant writing tutorial.
Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) -
Information about approved and
non-approved drugs for humans and animals, with research
notes and findings, toxicology research, and much more.
Madison Institute of Medicine - Lithium Information Center
- A resource for information on lithium treatment of
bipolar disorders and on other medical and biological
applications of lithium.
MedicineNet.com - Medical site, with
good psychopharmacological resources, including a dictionary
of medical terms and medications, information about diseases and
treatments, procedures and tests, etc.
MedWatch - The FDA
Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program -
A computerized
information database designed to support the FDA's
post-marketing safety surveillance program for all approved
drug and therapeutic biologic products.
Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy - Searchable
online version of the 17th edition of this classic reference
book from Merck, an international developer, manufacturer
and distributor of pharmaceuticals.
National Institute of Mental Health - Medications -
A detailed,
downloadable booklet that describes mental disorders and
includes a comprehensive list of medications for treating
them.
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
- The NIH, part of
the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is one of
the world's foremost medical research centers, and the
federal focal point for medical research in the United
States.
National Library of
Medicine (NLM) -
The NLM, on the campus
of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland,
is the world's largest medical library.
Partnership for
Prescription Assistance - Brings together
pharmaceutical companies, doctors, other health care
providers, patient advocacy organizations, and community
groups to help qualifying patients who lack prescription
coverage get the medicines they need.
